NO HELL NO
This place used to be great but it has seriously gone downhill since I last visited a few months ago. First off, it’s filthy. I visited during lunch and there were puddles on the floor, spilled liquids all over the place, etc. The food was ok, but it took forever and the chicken was room temp when I got it. Not sure why they did away with the cafeteria style ordering. Seemed to run way more smoothly then. Won’t be coming back here.
I don't travel I moved from Philadelphia to South Carolina and I stayed, but after watching the Baddie Twins on YouTube I wish your restaurant was here in Greenville everything looked so good and like the guys said everything was packaged so nicely!! Great Job
I was walking by and it looked almost like an old fashion diner. I had chicken tenders and twice fried mash potatoes. Everything was great. Fast friendly service.
I decided to give this place a try in the cold winter and so glad I did! I tried the chicken and waffles for the first time with a side of mac and cheese. It was very delicious. The chicken was juicy with tasty crunchy fried skin. The mac and cheese was good and I think with added spices for a twist - not the best mac and cheese but good nonetheless. I also tried their special Pie shake - made from their pies, which they also offer a variety of. I tried the bourbon pecan pie shake which was absolutely delicious, definitely recommend to try!The prices were a bit high but average for the New York area. I also recommend going to the downstairs area which was very cozy and offered games to play when done eating. They have a Foosball table and a bunch of board games. Overall, a wide selection of food, sides, deserts, and a fun cozy atmosphere. Will definitely be returning when in the area again!
So this was $10. The apricot pecan chicken wrap for sure sounded good until I saw it. The apricot didn’t show up, pecan left this wrap before me, and some of the chicken was hard as hell. I’m still hungry after eating this. So beware and just buy food from the truck nearby, for $10 you’ll get twice as much and better for sure.
Best fried chicken i have ever had in my life!
Good fried chicken, but I've had better. I wasn't crazy for the spice they put on the chicken, and the chicken wasn't served hot. The skin wasn't crunchy and the chicken didn't have a lot of meat. Popeye's is better tasting IMHO. The fried chicken is not terrible but at most average in taste. Save your calories for some other place. Also the restroom is falling apart.
Avoid this place at all cost! Way overpriced for garbage food. It tastes like it looks ... already eaten once by someone else. I was actually happy I made it to a table. The floor is so greasy I almost broke my neck slipping. This lunch cost me 17 dollars. A funny looking "sandwich" named wickedwich and a side of creamy cold slaw. The grilled chicken still had bones in ... so be aware I would say! The cole slaw was everything but creamy ... When I wanted to take a mayo cup out of their self service corner, my hands got all sticky due to open mayonnaise cups in the container, just disgusting. The only positive note was that my Blue Ribbon beer was cold enough to swallow away my sorrow!
Must go if you're into fried chicken dinners.. first of all this place has an amazing atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and welcoming; if you're not sure what to get they will know! The chicken is fried to perfection, and their coleslaw is a must have side dish..Unfortunately, their biscuit was not buttery and rich as expected but maybe I was just unlucky All their sodas are artisanal.
Good tasting chicken. Had the fried Kickin' Chicken sandwich and mashed potatos - was delicious.
Got the Texas Tenders (3pc) w/ Fries and I was full. This place is awesome. ;-)
Awesome...Ms.Kim was the best in the world treated us like Family. Move over commercial chicken. I'll make the trek to Hill Country to get served by Ms. Kim and crew. Pimiento Mac n cheese and mash and Mac is the real deal. But the biscuits well I'll leave things there.
One of the best places for fried chicken in NY CIty! Also have great service and reasonable prices. Definitely try the specials and the HUGE chicken tenders.
While it's not the best chicken and waffles I've ever had, the chicken was juicy (and huge) and of good quality. The layered frying technique is terrific. The standout for me was the cheesy fried mashed potatoes which are unabashed southern cooking luxury. French fries in mashed potatoes with cheese. Amazing. The roasted corn salad was a perfect acid cut to the heaviness of the other dishes. I also grabbed a PBR to cut the richness - yup, they have a small selection of beer. Overall this place feels like a kitschy chain, but serves up food you'd expect to find at a backyard cookout.
Dipped chicken sandwich is one of the best fried chicken sandwiches out there. They also have beer.
Employees very nice, good sides chicken not so much dry and salty af. The bathroom is horrendous ... you know what they say
We're from Texas screw you!The chicken and waffles is the way to go. You need to give them about 15 minutes to get it ready. Get a beer to wash it down. Take it down to the Grandma's basement and enjoy. You can play a board game, shoot some hoops or play foosball.
The food was good, but a little lacking. O had the hot honey chicken sandwich, which unfortunately was a bit dry. It would've been so much better with some coleslaw or some type of sauce. The fries were the kind with skin on them and they were very good, the biscuit was on the good side of average, the chicken tender was dry and pretty flavorless. The bourbon pecan pie was very good though!
The Counter staff here are very efficient and nice while it is very busy. I Got the Cuewich , Fried chicken with a fried onion and Barbecue sauce it was delicious. I can honestly say the lightly breaded chicken is pretty good quality for the price. The banana pudding pie itself wasn’t that great mostly because it’s overwhelmed by all the whip cream and the banana cream part isn’t that flavorful. The outer layer of crust was probably my favorite part of the pie. The biscuit that comes on the side can complete your meal. The store itself is very big with an upstairs and downstairs seating area.
Enjoyed the Wichsandwich, although there was no pepper jack cheese. The biscuit was good. Would've liked some honey or butter for biscuit. The decor was "old" southern style lunch counter kitchen motif.
LENTIL SOUP IS THE BEST.The cashier told me to try it, and I absolutely loved itI will most definitely return.
The customer service was impeccable, the waiter/cashier was a delight... it was super low key and quiet, the food was amazing... a must try if your in the area and want some boom fried chicken lol
Really good food and menu, a simple vibe. Chicken, waffles and milk shakes. What else could you want? The only issue was the chicken was a little dry and they forgot to make our order until we asked how long for our food. Other than that it was worth it, I’ll be back.
In the past I had order catering from hill country chicken and never had inconveniences when I pick up my orders. However I made an order on Friday to pick up today at 11:30 a.m. when I arrived to pick up they informed that the place open at 12:00 p.m. so I should wait 20 minutes because my order wasn't ready yet. In the website they have options to pick up food from catering since 11:30 a.m. not sure what is the discrepancy between the website and the restaurant.
Listen this place is off the wall!!!!Their chicken sandwich is incredible. Are they a little pricey? Of course it’s right by the flatiron building. Anyway if you’re lucky a man named Marty will be behind the cash register. He is the epitome of hospitality.
Wish I knew the servers name because he sure remembered mine! He pronounced it correctly (dosen't always happen)This place was clean, and had amazing service. They also cooked my chicken exactly as I wanted them. The menu was affordable. I got 2 thighs, a side of mash potatoes and 2 biscuits for $15.
The soda was the best part of the meal. I ordered chicken fingers with Mac and cheese on the side. This took almost 30 minutes to come out, and during that time I figured my food was being made fresh. Nope. The chicken was barely warm, and very dry. The Mac and cheese looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a few hours as it had that discolored dry old cheese look. I should have at least taken a picture, but I ended up just tossing the food and leaving since I was in a bit of a rush. The folks were nice at least. They must be used to it because when I asked about the wait I was offered a dessert on the house.
Portions are so small, and the food was not fresh. The chicken was decent, but lacked any seasoning. My side (Mac’n Cheese) was absolutely abysmal. Disgusting looking, dry, and lacking flavor. I asked them to replace it and they just gave me another serving of the same garbage batch. I was starving and in a time crunch so I just doused it in hot sauce and threw it back.
We got the "Sunday Special" which was two breasts and Fry's for $10 bucks. The chicken was moist and tender and the fries were fresh. I will say coming from Texas I'm used to a little more seasoning on both but it was still very good. The biscuit while a little too dense for my liking was actually very tasty. If I'm ever in New York again I will be back!
Love this food... Great tasting chicken and sides. Prices are good and lots of options. Mashed potatoes are addictive.
I love the food special the way they made their chicken something different
Went there today with my friends. Now being from London. I've only ever had chicken and waffles a couple of times as it's not big in the UK. But I can hands down say this is the worst meal I've had in my 5 days in NYC (and my friends felt the same)On the negative... The food. I'm not sure if this is standard in the states, but having boned chicken on waffles isn't my idea of fun. The chicken was dry and pretty bland. Even though the place was empty, the food came out slowly. The two stars come down to the fact the place is clean, it was decently prized and the staff where very friendly. Even though we didn't say anything about the food taking so long, they apologised for delay and gave us an extra wing each.Overall, I wouldn't recommend though as ultimately the food let it down.
This place has pretty good chicken. I had to get a chicken sandwich because they were all out of tenders. The chicken itself was moist and pretty tasty. Would have liked some selection a sauces (mayonnaise or honey mustard) other than ketchup. Fries were ok, a little overly oily for my taste. The drink, which was a fountain drink was a small cup for a regular. Something to keep in mind if getting it to go.
Delicious chicken, great fries, wonderful service a little pricey. Chicken and waffle plate $11. Apple Pie milkshake $6 Make your way to the basement for additional seating and a table soccer (foosball table) every interaction with the staff was pleasant. Much of the seating on the first floor and faces the street, great for people watching.
This used to be THE fried chicken spot a few years ago. A gem really. An unfortunate fall from grace: new complicated menu, loooong food wait and everything was cold and dry.You know what’s worse than cold and dry buttermilk biscuit? NOTHING!Also, clearly prioritizing delivery orders over in-store patrons.
I got the chicken waffle and oh my gosh it was amazing. The chicken was moist, not dry like other places and the waffle was cooked to perfection.
Great lunch with big portions. Staff are friendly!
So while visiting New York this place caught my eye because of its name. Hill Country Chicken I had to stop here for two reasons first I live in a region in Texas called the Hill Country. Also I am a poultry science major from Texas A&M so any place that is unique and serves chicken I have to stop. The first thing that caught my eye on the way in is the wishbone door handle such a neat detail! Also I have to say the food was really good, but the true stand out here was there banana pudding! It was absolutely amazing so rich and creamy some of the best I’ve ever tasted and being from Texas you don’t joke around with southern deserts. So I’ve had some amazing banana pudding and this place brought me home. So do yourself a favor y’all pull on that wishbone door handle and have yourself some banana pudding!
I wish I could say this was excellent chicken, but it's more along the lines of average. However if you find yourself here, try the pies or shakes. You also can't go wrong with a pie shake.
I don’t take joy in writing negative reviews, but my recent experience at this establishment was too abhorrent to not acknowledge. I have previously eaten here and loved it! Unfortunately during this visit (dinner vs lunch which is perhaps part of the problem?) they didn’t have the white wine I ordered so they gave me a room temperature can of rose cider. When I asked for a cup of ice it was acknowledged with a dirty look. I ordered the “classic” (cheaper) meal but was charged for the “deluxe” without receiving the biscuit that is part of the deluxe pricing. The pimento Mac and cheese contained barely any cheese, mostly lukewarm plain noodles (pictured.) I’m so embarrassed to have spent $25 on this terrible meal! I have patronized and loved Hill Country many times but this experience was enough to make me never visit again - woof!
Really long line and wait but the food was amazing. I got chicken and waffles, Mac and cheese and the spicy wickenwich(?) Sandwich.
Loved the food, good service. Lovely southern vibes. Great spot, will definitely be coming by again soon.
Truly a good old fried chicken style. Love their pies too.
Sub par fried chicken. The price does not necessarily match the taste. Popeyes would still be my top choice.
I stumbled on this spot on a rainy snowey Sunday afternoon. One of the best fried chicken you can find in the city. The decor is unique and feels authentic.
I've been here a month ago, how have I not written a review for it yet?I found this place just wandering around in Manhattan, it's easy to spot, it's on a corner with lights and neon signs. This place feels like "fast food style" place but the food here is much better quality. The chicken here is well seasoned with the correct spices, it's juicy and flavorful. The staff here is very nice, they offered me the brand new batch of sides coming out instead of taking the one left in the trays. I would definitely come back here again.
Waffle chicken was excellent .. highly recommended don't you don't eat breakfast.
Sooo neat! How did I not know about this place? I love all that they have so many flavors to try :) Check the website, super cute and fun with good sense of humor.
I went to pick up some mac and cheese. The service was quick and staff was super friendly. Mac and Cheese was solid too!
This is a real homey feeling place the chicken is great!, The biscuits are delicious and the banana cream pie is amazing. Unfortunately I have not had the pie in more than a year bc it either runs out or most of the time I'm there too late and the pies are not there. The sitting area is great but it's even better downstairs. It feels like you are eating at home and you can play a few games while you are there like foosball.
